After a couple of hours putting one of the operating units through my personal test suite at my local AT&T, I am feeling let down. The brand-new Torch hardware is already topped out. Although it outperforms my Curve in every way, I am looking ahead to a year from now, maybe even two (I tend not to upgrade until my contract is up). If the phone is dragging already, a few updates from now this phone will perform as poorly as my current one does.

Playing a Youtube video really outs the anemic processor. Audio and video out of sync, stutters, screen artifacts, resolution shifts…ugh. It was the same on both working units in the store and I don’t think it was the connection because the Aria did better than the Torch (and costs half as much), and the Captivate and iPHone played the video without a hitch.

Whether you spend your time watching Youtube or not, it does go to show that the hardware is already straining and I expect performance will only deteriorate over time.

I have been looking forward to this phone from the time it was announced! I love the Torch form factor. Touchscreen, keyboard, and vertical slider all in one unit. The new OS is a big improvement, the new browser is a big improvement. I can live with the chunky look and the low screen resolution (particularly if it means a longer battery life), but I am not going to put up with a slow, under-performing phone. Not recommended.
